How Gripe Water Works? Is it Safe for my Baby?

Saturday, December 8, 2018

Gripe water has been around for way over a century, and it is here to stay for the reasons I am going to talk about in this post. It is an over-the-counter liquid used to relieve gastrointestinal symptoms in babies, safely. A huge number of companies that make and sell it don’t use the exact same formula but it is pretty much based on the original formulation that was invented by William Woodward, an English pharmacist. The main ingredients of gripe water are sodium bicarbonate and dill seed oil.

Let’s have a look at both and see whether they are safe for infant consumption.

Sodium Bicarbonate: Also known as baking soda, sodium bicarbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to produce water, salt and carbon dioxide. Hence it treats indigestion and heartburn by acting as an anti-acid. Apart from that it also decreases acidity in blood (acidity causes calcium loss through urine) hence strengthening bones.

Dill Seed Oil: It is an essential oil extracted from the seeds of the Dill (Anethum graveolens) plant which belongs to the celery family. The oil smells like grass and is pale yellow in color. The chemical components of the oil are limonene, Ξ±-pinene, Ξ³-Terpinene, decanal, terpinene-4-ol, Ξ²-elemene, cis-Dihydrocarvone and caryophyllene, trans-hydrocarbon, carvone and dillapiole. Here carvone is the main component that gives dill seed oil the ability to aid digestion by stimulating and releasing gastric juices, and prevents gas formation in the intestines. Carvone also provides a calming and soothing effect, hence promotes good sleep. Dillapiole has been proven to have anti-inflammatory properties. The rest of the components are powerful antioxidants that protect against a wide range of diseases.

Have you tried gripe water? Do you find it effective? Please share your experience and view below, would love to hear!

Friday Five - Baby Girl Nursery Inspiration

Thursday, April 26, 2018

Search Instagram, Pinterest and you will get thousands of ideas for baby nursery. Below I am listing some of my recent favorites I selected from Instagram. Kudos to the creative moms!

1. petite.voyou

A mommy of two, this Dutch mom has a whole shop with prettiest nursery items you will find. Did I mention her Instagram feed is amazing!

2. thestylesafari

Stephanie styles her baby girl's nursery with polka dots and constellations. Such a great idea for your future scientist!

3. monikahibbs

Loose watercolor florals wallpaper, soft pastels color palette, bunnies.. what's not to love about this airy-fairy nursery. (Side note: If you love romantic spaces, you NEED to check out her feed).

4. tonileebennett

Simply love the blend of grays with blush pastels. The beautiful combination of stars, sparkle, watercolor florals (anemones, LOVE!), roses pom-poms, glitter and fur makes my heart so happy!

5. jenniferocreative

Oh my! Who thought you could use gray so beautifully in a baby girl's nursery. I love how she balances the coolness of grays and blush with warmth of beige gold (see the letter O and that rustic table). Love the wallpaper as well.

Oh glorious sunshine 🌞 (and nearly finished rooms!). That’s right, our toddler may be 31 months old but her “nursery” has only just (mostly) come together πŸ™ˆ I figured I couldn’t allow myself to start on the second nursery til the first was complete, so that helped me finally ✔️ this room off the never ending list. Well, actually there are still a few small items left but considering my timeline to complete things these days, I’m going to call it done. Thankful for @urbanwalls for helping this girly room come together. It’s such a slow go over here but definitely looking forward to getting more rooms finished before the πŸ‘ΆπŸΌ #2 deadline. Also side note, if you love Moroccan pouffes but not leather (because πŸ„❤️), I found this great faux leather alternative at #crateandkids. #rugsusa #urbanwalls
